CLACKAMAS SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT HQ
The Clackamas Soil and Water Conservation District Headquarters is located on a former farm site in Beavercreek, OR. The organization issued an RFP seeking a landscape design that reflects their role as an agency dedicated to inspiring and teaching the public best practices for land management.
Working with agency scientists and staff, Studio Wild developed a series of demonstration gardens showcasing: a pollinator garden, fire wise strategies, stormwater management features, and meadow restoration. A simple trail system routes visitors through the gardens which are open to the public.
The heart of the project is a raised terrace at the center of the building to serve as an everyday work and lunch space by the staff as well as hosting public outreach events in the evenings. A canopy structure offers shade, rain protection, and a mount for slide show presentations.
Plantings are native or adapted to Oregon. Materials are selected to demonstrate approaches a single family home owner could feasibly implement on their property. Trees blown down on site were repurposed as sculptural habitat and soil building features which demonstrate sequestering carbon onsite and showing the decay process as part of a healthy , dynamic landscape. Pollinator plants, a simple bubbler fountain, and a bee hotel provide habitat for birds and insects.
