BEAVERTON HOMELESS SHELTER

Beaverton, OR

This new 60 bed, low-barrier homeless shelter provides a refuge to citizens of Washington County that need short term, stable housing. Residents are accommodated for days or weeks and offered a range of programs to help them transition to long term housing and better futures.

In addition to the design team, several employees of the City of Beaverton, a wide range of people and organizations in the human services sector, and a number of individuals with lived houseless experience made up an advisory committee. Our mission as a body was to make the space as beautiful and uplifting and program rich as we could.

Because sleeping dormitories are closed during the day, the exterior spaces are especially important for residents to find year round privacy, community, exercise, and relaxation as they consider next steps.

Landscape elements include: a large canopy with smoking and non smoking sides, a range of moveable furniture for people to adapt to their comfort, heated benches, a sunning deck, a water feature to mask street noise, layered plantings to provide calming contact with nature, raised garden beds, lockable bike storage, a pet relief and wash area, and shipping containers to store resident’s possessions during their stay. A large indoor light well over an indoor tree provides the centerpiece of the interior.
